1. 1. THE NURSERY INDUSTRY: THE SOURCE OF MATERIAL

The Italian nursery industry, on the contrary to the French one, has the responsibility of managing fields of certified scion mother plants. On the one hand, this entails planting costs estimated at around 50,000 €/ha, and on the other, the responsibility of maintaining and managing the crop at a cost of about 12,000 €/ha a year. In France, the nurseryman asks the public body (Chambre d’Agricolture) for the scions necessary for production.

We nurserymen, therefore, need to have basic knowledge of trends linked to the demand for different varieties, clones and rootstocks in order to plan investments in scion and rootstock mother plants.

From the analysis of data from the last ten years, clear changes emerge in the type of demand resulting from the changes in life style that we analyzed in previous chapters. The market, previously oriented towards absolute quality, the search for high scores in wine guides and vineyards suitable for making structured and high-image wines, is now demanding simpler wines that are less alcoholic and with a preference for white grape varieties.
