Piedmont, in particular, has however maintained the level of control over the territory without sacrificing the economic possibilities deriving from wines obtained in less binding production conditions, more similar to the commodity situations represented by many GIs in other regions, by identifying DOs of large territories (Piedmont, Monferrato) which fulfill this function by focusing on appellations well known on the market.
