SICILIA

Of the seven possible GIs, the only noteworthy one is Terre Siciliane, which with a simple lexical exercise cloned the previous GI Sicilia today Do. It noted its eminently economic and spillover purposes, but the recent (2017) exclusion of Nero d'Avola n. and Grillo b. from the varietal designation has limited its economic reach. Nevertheless, it remains the preferred appellation for northern bottlers, both for the possibility of indicating up to four grape varieties on the label and for the rich range of international grape varieties that can be used. It does not seem strange, therefore, that in table 5.10 the cosmopolitan grape varieties Shyrah n. and Chardonnay b. appear at the first place in this GI at national level, with equal positions of primacy for Merlot n. and Cabernet Sauvignon n. It is to be asked whether it is a sign of pride for the island's enology or a symptom of colonization.
